COPENHAGEN

The most memorable New Year’s Eve so far, you ask? The one that we spent in COPENHAGEN, DENMARK in order to celebrate 2023 year just coming. We had only one day there to explore – unfortunately quite rainy and windy. Luckily Copenhagen turns out to be perfect destination for the all-day-long walk in order to take the most of it!

We have started our speed adventure with some calories intake. When looking for the local bakery, we have found some incredible delicious cinnamon rolls called  “Kanelsnegle”. That one we enjoyed with a cup of coffee! At places like this you can feel the “hygge” atmosphere of the city. This Danish concept brings coziness and well-being to the center of the live and is emphasized in the local charming cafes with warm lighting or comfortable blankets.

With that we were ready to explore – our first stop was Nyhavn. This is the most famous picturesque waterfront area which is filled with colorful buildings, restaurants, and cafes. It was nice to observe people with the cup of coffee or having a breakfast outside, even though it was the last day of the cold December.

As we enjoyed our walk and admired the local architecture we have reached to Kastellet. This is a star-shaped fortress in Copenhagen with the characterized red buildings. With that we were closer to the next Copenhagen landmark the Little Mermaid. The statue is situated on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade, and has been created as a tribute to Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen and his famous fairy tale of the same name.

There was no time to waste, so we headed on our way back to the heart of the Copenhagen. The next place on our list was Rosenborg Castle. The castle is known for its red-brick facade and intricate detailing. The building is surrounded by the Kongens Have (King’s Garden), one of the oldest parks in Copenhagen, which makes it perfect for the quick break to rest!

In order to find a spot for lunch, from the City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) we headed to the Strøget, the Copenhagen shopping paradise! This spot offers everything from high-end fashion to Danish design, making it a perfect destination for fashion enthusiasts. Alongside the shops, we found the cozy restaurant, perfect to take a little break and taste Danish cuisine. Enjoying the Smørrebrød,  traditional Danish open-faced sandwich that consists of a dense, dark rye bread known as “rugbrød” topped with various savory ingredients, we had a look on people in rush for the last shopping and preparing for the end year celebration.

Filled with all the goodies we headed to our last place on the list – Tivoli Gardens. This is famous amusement park in the heart of Copenhagen, and it usually hosts a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks, live music, and various entertainment options. The park is beautifully lit up in the evening, creating a magical atmosphere, especially during the holiday season. With the  festive Tivoli Gardens atmosphere, New Year’s Eve celebration in Copenhagen turned out to be a memorable way to welcome the new year, that’s for sure!
