LUXEMBOURG

Here comes the last country from the BENELUX series – LUXEMBOURG. Visiting one of the smallest, yet one of the richest country in Europe at the spring season 2024 was perfect for its nature just turning green. It looks like the fairytale place to be! One day trip was just enough, as we luckily caught some sunny day, to have a walk through the charming city of Luxembourg. It is worth to have in mind that the public transportation there is free of charge!

But just before that, on our way to the capital city, we have taken a road through charming hills in order to see Vianden Castle. It is one of the most stunning medieval castles in Europe, perched high above the town of Vianden in northern Luxembourg. It stands as a national treasure and serves with the panoramic views of the Our Valley. No more words needed, it is located in the beautiful scenery indeed!

There was no time to waste so we headed straight to the Luxembourg city. We parked our car near to the city center and headed straight to the Panoramic Elevator of the Pfaffenthal. The glass lift build on the hill connects Pfaffenthal down in the Alzette valley with the upper Ville Haute (historic center). It rises approximately 71 m in about 30 seconds and offers panoramic views of the valley below. What a quick, free of charge way to get to the city center! The details of the one day trip in the Luxembourg City can be seen on the map below.

There is a wide range of parks in Luxembourg, on our way we visited Parc Fondation Pescatore, the beautiful place to have some picnic and rest in the green oasis in the central part of the Luxembourg. From this point we headed to the historic center to find some spot for lunch. Just perfect for that is the main street in the historic center the Rue Philippe II. This street, running through the heart of the historic Ville Haute, charming visitors with the elegant early 20th century façades and corners with cafés, boutiques, and restaurants.

This led us to the Gëlle Fra, Luxembourg’s iconic “Golden Lady,” that stands proudly atop a tall obelisk in Place de la Constitution. This bronze statue states for Victory and Freedom and memorizes the Luxembourgers who volunteered to fight with the Allied forces during World War I. Just nearby is located the Cathédrale Notre-Dame a stunning example of late Gothic architecture with renaissance and baroque elements. The square is situated on the historic Beck bastion, with the incredible view over the Pétrusse Valley and Adolphe Bridge, again in the beautiful scenery.

After that we lost a little bit in the historic center street to observe the people of Luxembourg and just enjoy our family walk. This led us to the most iconic place in the Luxembourg City the view on the Casemates du Bock, one of Europe’s most formidable fortresses. Here the whole story of the Luxembourg have begin. The panoramas from its edges and tunnels are spectacular— the river valley, old city, bridges, and all of that filled with the nature in full bloom. What a day it’s been!
